Did this going through a downhill turn, hit a root, and slid out. and it was right next to the canal path so all I had to do was ride home on the paved path, but got screwed on the last turn (was coming down the singletrack near the apartments on Fall Hill)

Apparently these rims aren't welded, and just have a joiner peg holding the damn thing together. That's what I get for going cheap

After helping out with the trail maintenance day Monday I would like to say thanks to everyone who works to keep these trails in great shape. I have been riding the trails the last year and never thought much about what it takes to make new trails or to maintain the existing trails. I love riding the trails and appreciate everyone who helps to keep them great.

Wolfe St Chili Cook-off

If anyone happens to be cruising around Fredericksburg Saturday 9/4 then think about stopping by the Wolfe St Chili Cook-off on the 800 block of Wolfe. We have a block party every Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend on the Saturday of that weekend. For the last 3 years, the Labor Day block party has turned into a chili cook-off. I think we've got about 12 entries right now so the competition should be pretty good. It's open to anyone who wants to cruise through or enter a chili. If you want to enter then let me know and I'll give you the competition rules. Judging is at 3pm. Block party goes on until...

Bugs, Ivy or other?

OK, Im new to riding the quarry trails. I've been out twice in the last month and both times the day after riding I get small bumps around my ankles and shins that itch like crazy. I spend a lot of time in other wooded areas and don't get bites or ivy so I have no idea what's with the quarry trails.

Great trails though

After 10 months of not having a bike or having one boxed up and not able to ride it, I will be picking up a 2009 Trek EX7 in just a few hours. Holy sh!t, I can't tell you what it's been like not have metal and mechanics between my legs for that long. If I didn't have to keep my sick days and vacation time stored up for a future child birth, i would have taken the whole day off tomorrow and rode until my arse falls off.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO! I can't wait until work is done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

East side quarry trails now in jeopardy

Not sure if you saw it in the paper, but Cal Ripken himself came down and officially broke ground for the baseball complex back there on Fall Hill Ave./Wicklow Rd. I always knew they were going to do this, on the area just inside (and probably outside) the gate, but was unsure as to how much land they will utilize. The paper stated, "...ball fields will be built on 48 acres of land donated by Fredericksburg." I looked at the tax parcel map I have and it clearly shows that huge chunk of land there as 47.89 acres. This chunk includes all the land butted up against Wicklow as it runs along the bottom heading along the river. It also includes land on the 95 side of Fall Quarry Run, from the trailhead all the way up to where it crosses the stream and about halfway to the tunnel.
I am hopeful that the perimeter of this acreage will not be leveled for playing fields since it is so hilly. However, they will be looking for a place to run drainage pipes and ditches, and/or build berms or other erosion control measures.
Phase one which includes a couple fields is supposed to be completed by Spring of next year. I imagine in the near future we will start seeing stakes and survey tape sprouting up everywhere.

Lastly, let's keep an eye out on what is going to happen to all those crib dam logs piled up near the gate. The person(s) who are in charge of getting rid of it may now need to do so fast and cheap/free. We may be in a good position to ask the city to use some for Scout Trail or elsewhere. (They may think those historic planks may be a good idea so close to the river they were plucked out from too--perhaps another angle to pitch).

Ahhh...progress!

Quarry Trail Maintenance Day, 9/6/10

FATMUG is organizing a trail maintenance day at the Quarry Trails on Monday, September 6th. Yes, that is Labor day. I know the idea of working on a holiday, especially Labor day, may run contrary to the very fabric of many people's being but don't think of it as work! Think of it as a really slow hike with tools!

We plan to meet at 8am, see how many volunteers we have, and then split the work up accordingly. We'll be working in the area of the most recent re-route (Fall Quarry Run trail near the tunnel) where some bench cutting needs to be done to make that trail sustainable. The scout trail is also in need of some pruning and puddle draining attention.

If you can't make it at 8 then think about coming by a little later. If you can't work for very long, stop by for as long as you can. Any help is appreciated!

The meeting spot will be the ball field parking lot at the intersection of Fall Hill Ave and Wicklow Drive.

Thanks and hope to see you there.
